it’s a peplum party – look #26

Peplum-what-what?? you say? It’s not surprising. I had to look the term up myself, but designers everywhere seem to have long been aware of  this vintage trend. Basically, peplum refers to a style of skirt/dress/jacket/top which has a piece of fabric attached at the waist which is shaped into a frill.

SJ had it down pat back in her SATC days, then Louis Vuitton, in true LV style, brought the trend further to our attention with their 2009 Fall RTW collection and now the peplum dress is everywhere, including on the backs of countless stars and fashionistas.

The look is definitely elegant and sophisticated, so it’s naturally a more formal trend. Generally peplum is great for the office and special occasions, however, a jersey dress such as the Topshop one below works great if you want to pull off the trend on weekends. You could team the Stella McCartney top below with a pair of skinny vintage wash jeans, a bit of bling and pumps for an out-on-the-town combo.

Designers add their own take to the trend:
(Personal favorite – Mary Katrantzou. Can’t go past the amazing digital print!)
